Kyrie Irving Traded to Dallas Mavericks

Luka Doncic wanted the Mavericks to make a move in order to improve the team ahead of the NBA trade deadline. Today his wish came true, as the Mavs acquired Kyrie Irving via trade with the Brooklyn Nets.

Just days ago Kyrie made it known he would like to be traded prior to the upcoming NBA trade deadline. This announcement prompted much speculation and hate from mainstream media outlets, with many stating no teams would or should have any interest in acquiring Irving given his turbulent career.

However we know talent trumps all, and like it or not Kyrie Irving is one of the most talented basketball players in the world. And for that reason, Marc Cuban and the Dallas Mavericks made the move to acquire the incredibly talented point guard to pair alongside their franchise centerpiece, Luka Doncic. The addition of Irving should help reduce the offensive burden that Doncic is typically faced with.

Trade Details

The Brooklyn Nets wasted little time in trading their often disgruntled star point guard. The Nets are reportedly receiving Dorian Finney-Smith, Spencer Dinwiddie, an unprotected 2029 first-round pick and second-round picks in 2027 and 2029 from the Mavericks in exchange for Irving.

Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd supposedly supported the idea to acquire Irving to play alongside Luka Doncic. In addition to the support from the head coach, Kyrie has known Mavericks General Manager Nico Harris for years dating back to their time working together at Nike.

Dallas Mavericks Perspective

The saying: “timing is everything” comes to mind when trying to determine why the Dallas Mavericks would make this move. With Luka recently expressing his desire for the organization to make a move in order to improve the teams ability to compete for a championship.

Not long after that Irving hit the trade market after failing to reach an agreement on an extension with the Nets. Combine all that with a rapidly approaching trade deadline and an owner like Marc Cuban who is not afraid to take some risk, and BOOM! The deal gets done.

Time will tell whether or not the move pays off, however it’s a splash move that makes the Mavs real contenders to compete for a championship. And that’s exactly what Luka Doncic was asking for.

Brooklyn Nets Perspective

The relationship between the Brooklyn Nets and Kyrie Irving has been shaky at best over the last four years. Irving missed a significant amount of time for a variety of reasons, including: injury, refusal to vaccinate and suspension.

Perhaps those are the exact reasons why the team had no interest in signing Kyrie to the extension he is seeking. Why re-up when the return has been so dismal to this point? An who can blame them for wanting to pull the plug on an obviously failed experiment.

The decision to trade Kyrie comes with long term positives, but short term consequences in that the team immediately got worse. Draft picks are nice for the future, but as of now the Brooklyn Nets roster is less talented than it was prior to the trade.
