Deshaun Watson’s Record Breaking Cap Hit

Despite his rocky first season with the Browns, Deshaun Watson’s massive contract extension is a sign of the team’s belief in his talent. His cap hit expanding to just under $55 million in 2023, the largest in NFL history, which only emphasizes the belief the Browns place on his ability to help turn the franchise around.

Cleveland made a bold move by trading multiple high draft picks for Deshaun Watson. Even with his cap hit expanding to a nearly $55 million in 2023, the Browns are willing to invest in Watson to help elevate the team to a championship level.

When the Browns traded for Deshaun Watson, they knew they were getting one of the most talented quarterbacks in the league. Now they are waiting and hoping for that investment to pay off. The record breaking cap-hit in 2023 is not ideal, though the Browns have had extra money to spend so in the short term it is unlikely to impact roster decisions. However that may change beyond next season.
